My coaching philosophy is very simple and straight forward: each athlete has to be evaluated as an individual. I start out with in-depth testing for the swim, bike, run and bike/run brick workouts. After a thorough evaluation of the testing data, I create a fully customized training program that is developed specifically for each athlete.
I am a big believer in periodization, but not classical periodization- it doesn’t work in triathlon. The basic limitations with classical periodization, which is a multi-targeted approach include the following:
Lack of energy for the next workout with a multi-targeted approach
Physiological adaptations occur via different pathways
Different physiological adaptations require different periods for recovery- it’s not a one-size fits all
Lack of sports-specific stimulus during training
The inability to provide a multi-peak program for multiple events throughout the season
I use what has now been termed Block Periodization, which is far more flexible and customizable for individual athletes based off their current ability, goals and desires. The key features of my method are:
Higher concentration of training load to provide the proper training stimulus
I minimize the targeted abilities/energy systems to provide the necessary to maximize performance
I use specialized blocks (accumulation, transmutation and realization) that build upon each other in a synergistic fashion allowing for the proper recovery between training sessions
I am able to peak athletes for multiple events throughout the entire season, while continuing to train and increase performance
What results has this method achieved? I have developed and created everything from first-time Ironman finishers to professional triathletes. This method has assisted athletes in qualifying for word championships at every distance. If you want to use cutting-edge science, this is the place to do it.
